What is MLM and How Can I Make Money Online?

Like you I once asked, what is mlm? At the time I was recently laid off and was looking for a way to make money online. I didn’t want to return to the business world and thought that being self-employed would give me the freedom I desired.

Although I had an extensive background in project management and other leadership positions I did not know the first thing about MLM or starting a business... online or otherwise.

Thankfully I found MLM. So what is MLM? MLM (Multi-level Marketing) is the business structure that allows individuals to become Independent Business Owners (IB0s) retailing the parent organizations products and earning income recruiting others to do the same.

With an initial investment of less than a hundred dollars you are often given professionally designed e-commerce websites (example:HealthZone) to retail your products. You could also use a direct sale approach and hold your own inventory. You are given the opportunity to own your own business without the overhead of developing, packaging, housing the products.

Your responsibility is to market the products.

This was an attractive concept to me as I didn’t have the desire or capital to invest in opening a “storefront” and I knew I didn’t want to become as salesman either. I knew right from the start I was going to use the internet to reach my audience.

MLM also offers the opportunity to recruit others into the MLM opportunity. You earn a commission not only on their initial sign-up but more importantly you share a percentage of the profits from their retail sales as well. In this way you are able to form an organization of sales staff.

As your own personal customer base grows, your down-line of distributors and their customer bases the potential income increases exponentially.

Most MLM sponsors will tell you how great their opportunity is, how amazing and exclusive their products are and all that you need to do to succeed is “follow this easy plan.”

Its true there are quite a few legitimate MLM opportunities out there and they do have some pretty cool products however… to capitalize on any business opportunity it will take a strong business plan coupled with a bit of effort.

Anyone selling anything that even smells like a “get rich quick” opportunity should be avoided. Often it isn’t even their fault. They bought into it hook line and sinker. Many believe they are going to be the next millionaire simply by “following the plan.”

Once involved in MLM you will quickly realize that you will need to do something different if you really want to succeed.

At this point the next major pitfall many fall victim to is the internet marketing “gurus” preying on the struggling MLM’er. In essence they feed a new “quick and easy plan” but this time it is packaged in very convincing wrapping.

In fact it IS advisable to soak as much of this marketing data up as you can as you are in the business of marketing products and recruiting and internet marketing is the perfect vehicle to do just that.

The problem is that these internet marketing experts are in the business of well...internet marketing. In other words their goal isn’t to educate their client in how to be successful in MLM. It is to sell pieces of the puzzle one by one stringing them along a a marketing pipeline.

What is MLM? In my opinion it is just about the most incredible opportunity that exists today. Anyone regardless of professional background, financial status or education level can own their own business for the cost of dinner for two.

What is MLM? MLM is an opportunity. YOU must capitalize on it.

The only opportunity I believe is even greater than MLM is the Internet. With the internet you can reach a global market from the comfort of your living room. The fact that I can run my entire business without leaving my home still amazes me.

At this point in my career I am literally an admin. Using the internet you truly can automate 90% of your business. Once you do the work its practically “set it and forget it.”
