“MLM: Pyramid Scheme Or Legitimate Business Opportunity?”
There is a distinctive difference between a pyramid scheme and Multi-level Marketing (MLM). MLM is a business structure that allows any individual to market a business’s products for profit. Essentially a MLM organization allows anyone to be their sales people for a small initial investment. However they also give their “distributors” the freedom to recruit others into the organization as well with the added incentive that they will receive a small percentage of the profits these new distributors make. This added component turns a classic salesperson position into an “independent business owner” able to manage an entire team of distributors, marketing products for profit without the cost of managing the “business end” of things including product development, packaging, distribution etc… “So What Is the Pyramid Scheme?” When the founders of Amway invented this new business model the success was phenomenal. Soon one MLM after another started popping up to duplicate the financial success Amway was having. Unfortunately… legitimate business owners were not the only ones who took notice. The Pyramid Scheme was born. The pyramid is the natural structure of any organization whether it be corporate, MLM or a family. The pyramid scheme was a scam that modeled itself after the MLM business structure. The problem was it had no product…there was no business. It would ask individuals to join a dummy corporation for a sign-up fee (often large). The members now recruited others into the scheme…making a percentage of the sign-up fee of everyone they recruited. Of course…everyone except for those at the very top of the pyramid end up losing money. In Fact… Amway (the inventor of MLM) was one of the first to lobby for legislation against the pyramid scheme.
