Using open-ended questions you will be able to gain insight as to where they are looking for or need support. As you do this you do not want to remain on the surface level. Really dig to make sure you understand the client’s issue. Do not simply jump to a conclusion based on your preconceived notions or personal experience. If you suspect you know what the problem is ask a question to clarify first. Only after confirming you have a viable solution should you share it.

Do not frustrate your client with random suggestions.

This is where preparation ahead of time can pay serious dividends. By asking questions that direct an individual to a desired conclusion you allow the individual to discover the issue or even better the solution on their own. This self-discovery actually allows your client to feel as if they had generated the idea or discovered the problem on their own. This helps create buy-in and there is a higher likelihood for immediate action.
